The B5Media network:

There’s Always Room for….an 80s Flashback

I’m not even sure I want to write about this event….

So before I get accused of being sexist, a pig, or promoting the objectification of women, let me just say one thing….it’s for charity!!!!

Thursday evening, just a couple miles from the seat of American government and the halls of power that brought the world the Decoration of Independence, the Bill of Right and the Nineteenth Amendment, we get Women’s Jell-O Wrestling or Jelloca Lucha Libre, (Jell-O wrestling for a good cause).

There, I said it.

One night, eight aggressive competitors, one purse — all going to the winner’s charity of choice.

Wrestling in mud or in the dirt is probably the most authentic form of ancient wrestling, before the days of indoor stadiums and the WWF. The first recorded modern day mud wrestling took place between two professional wrestlers, probably in the mid-1970s.

During the 1980s, mud wrestling’s popularity spread and was used as a form of entertainment in bars and for charity fund-raising with women wrestling each other, or a team of women wrestling a man.

Over the years, Jell-O, chocolate pudding, creamed corn, mashed potatoes and oil have all been substituted for mud.

The range of official wrestling “uniforms” is also as varied as the food product to be wrestled in. Some competitors wear wrestling-like attire, others wear athletic clothing, bikinis, street clothes or lingerie.

In 1981, the “sport” even made an appearance in the movie, Stripes, with Bill Murray. Mild-mannered Army recruit Dewey Oxberger, played by John Candy, wrestles three bikini clad women.

So just how do you recruit for women Jell-O wrestlers? I guess you simply put up an “Apply Within” sign in the window.

And be glad I didn’t include one of the almost 1,700 You Tube clips of women Jell-O, mud, oil, and pudding wrestling.

Hmmm, maybe I should document the classic Swiss wrestling, which kind of translates as; lifting each other by the pants…

My girlfriend wants to do some kind of wrestling in jello or something like that. Do you know where there is a place that still has this in Texas? We live in the houston area.
