Witness for the Prosecution

Leonard, a married American living in post-WW-II London, gets arrested for the murder of a lonely but rich, middle-aged widow. His questionable involvement with her suggests he’s guilty.  It becomes more and more likely that he’s committed this horrible crime when the police discover the infatuated victim made him the beneficiary of her fortune.

Leonard needs a lawyer, a good one.  Enter Sir Wilfrid Robarts. A sickly barrister who’s under strict doctor’s orders to avoid stress, cigars, drinking and most importantly…the courtroom.  He takes Leonard’s case anyway, but only under the watchful eye of his private and overly-controlling nurse.

When the case goes to trial, after having provided a credible alibi for her husband, Leonard’s actress wife, Christine, is surprisingly called as a witness for the prosecution.

Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution is a classic story of betrayal, guilty consciences, lies and deception that make this case a twisted mystery for everyone involved.

Witness for the Prosecution was made into a 1957 movie, staring Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton. It was nominated for six Academy Awards.

This production, at the Lazy Susan Dinner Theatre in suburban Woodbridge, Virginia, includes a Pennsylvania Dutch style dinner buffet. It’s fairly generic (chicken, beef, fish) buffet that gets mixed (or worse) reviews, so don’t expect a fine dining experience.  After 20+ years, the building is also ready for an upgrade. But the actors and productions are usually of a high-caliber and enjoyable.
