Thirteen Days of Japan - Feb. 5-17

In 1912, a gift of 3,000 cherry trees from the city of Tokyo was presented to the people of Washington, DC. Since then, the annual cherry blossom festival has been a reminder of the bond with Japan.

For two weeks at the Kennedy Center, you can enjoy Japan Culture + Hypreculture as it explodes with over 40 performances, 450 artists, lectures, cultural events, music and dance performances, anime and more. Plus, many of the events are free.

Some of the free events include:

  • Robots, robots and more robots at Robotopia Rising - Feb. 7–17, Mon. – Fri. 12:30–7:30, Sat. & Sun. 10–7:30. Free, no tickets required.
  • Tony-nominated fashion designer Junko Koshino who uses the classic Kimono shape in her collections. Her fashions will be on display in the Opera House lobby and on Thursday, Feb. 7th at 6:00 p.m., a free fashion show will be presented.
  • Using homemade instruments, Maywa Denki unique (and at times silly) performance art will be on display with demonstrations twice daily and a free performance Saturday, Feb. 16th at 6:00 p.m.
  • At the Harajuku Evening, discover the latest trends in Japanese Harajuku (punk-glam-mod-street) attire, music and culture, including robot DJs, hip Goth-Lolitas, and more. Sunday, Feb. 17th, 6:00 p.m. at the Millennium Stage.

Maywa Denki…performance art at it’s silliest.

I think I have have to hop the Delta Shuttle down to D.C. for the Harajuku Evening! Years ago, when I was in Japan, I exited the subway at Harajuku Station and had never seen anything like it… which is a lot to say for a New Yorker!

Nice to know that SOMETHING can shock a New Yorker!! Probably like my first experience at a punk club.
