Easy to Get Lost
No, not on Dupont Circle, but in a cornfield maze with the kids. Through the end of October, there’s all kinds of fall and Halloween activities for the kids, like corn mazes, pumpkin patches and hay rides offered all over the area.
One place with a truly huge maze is the 11-acre cornfield at Temple Hall Farm Regional Park in suburban Leesburg, VA. It’s so large that it needs a couple elevated points in the maze where you can see over the top of the corn to try to get your bearings.
Besides being a 286-acre outdoor farm and animal learning center, the park also offers kids barnyard activities, as well as pony and wagons rides (additional cost). Take home a pumpkin from the U-pick-it pumpkin patch, or see how far your can shoot an ear of corn from their Corn Cannon. Let the kids play in a corn box (think sand box with dried corn kernels) or pet a llama.

About a year or two ago, I experienced my first (and, so far, only) corn maze. Having grown up a complete urbanite, I found the whole thing fascinating at first and great fun. But after half an hour of walking around with very few visual landmarks, my feet were starting to hurt, and the fun factor started to drop a bit.
“Haven’t we been here before?”
“How can you tell? It all looks the same…”
