Live Like a Local, Rent a DC Condo

If you’re visiting DC for a week or more you might want to think about renting a condo versus staying at a hotel.
Each option has it’s advantages and disadvantages.  Do you want somewhere where you and your friends can cook a meal?  Do you really need daily maid service? Do you enjoy traveling with friends or family in a communal setting? Will your sister’s kids drive you crazy after 20 minutes? Do you need a pool, bar, health club, etc.?
CyberRentals is a great site that offers global vacation rentals, including, at last check, about 20 condos, townhouses and apartments available in …read more

Before the American Idol Train Wreck

Travel back in time before there were the singing train-wrecks on American Idol to 1930s New York City high-society.  The play, Souvenir, now running at The Studio Theater, tells the real-life story of the famous (or infamous) opera “singer” and wealthy socialite, Florence Foster Jenkins strives to become a success after everyone close to her tells her to give up her dream and any change at a career singing opera.
As a talentless “opera soprano”, she eventually became famous in the New York opera world, not for her singing talent, but for her total lack of rhythm, pitch and tone.  With virtually no singing ability and …read more

A Great Guest Post from Family Travel

My buddy Sheila at Family Travel just returned from what sounds like a fun family trip to Virginia’s “historical triangle” - Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown.  She graciously offered to write a guest post for The DC Traveler.  There’s tons going on in the triangle, and it’s not just limited to historical attractions.

Chincoteague Pony Swim - July 25th

Back in the 1600s, (the legend goes), a Spanish galleon lost the battle with the Atlantic and sunk off the coast of the now Virginia and Maryland borders.  What survived was herd of wild mustangs that swam ashore and have been roaming the beaches, forest and salt marsh of Assateague Island ever since.  Recently, the remains of a Spanish ship wreck was found in the waters off the island, which may add more fuel to the story.
In reality, it was probably early Virginia colonial settlers that let their horses graze on the island, which provided a natural fence for the livestock.

The herds …read more

If Indiana Jones met Tarzan for a Round of Putt-Putt Golf

Woody’s Perils of the Lost Jungle miniature golf takes putt-putt golf to a new level.
The kids will love the jungle theme, complete with monkeys hanging from trees, snakes, spiders, shrunken heads, even a headhunter that are all part of this imaginative miniature golf course about 10 minutes west from Tysons Corner in suburban Herndon, Virginia.
For a bit of history on mini-golf, we need to travel back to the origins of golf, to the famous St. Andrews golf course in Scotland. It seems that in the 1860s, women started to take an interest in golf, but “violently” swinging a …read more

Tour DC in Style…Segway Style!

Three years in the making, the Segway Personal Transporter is the world’s first two-wheeled, self-balancing, electric transport device. With no accelerator or brake, the Segway is propelled simply by the rider’s posture and motion. Leaning forward causes the Segway to roll forward, lean back and it stops or reverses. A single knob on the left hand grip controls the rider’s steering.
Using battery-powered motors, dual computers, tilt sensors and five gyroscopes, the Segway automatically (and seemingly magically) maintains its upright position, even while standing motionless. The top of the line Segway (about $5,500) can cruise at speeds of up to 12½ …read more

DC Restaurant Review - The Best in Lebanese Food

The 2007 Washington, DC RAMMY Awards (Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington) are out and one of my favorite places, Lebanese Taverna, was voted as the “People’s Favorite” restaurant of the year.
And I agree couldn’t agree more.
This crowd pleaser does one thing consistently well - serve great Middle Eastern food.
Unlike many kids that grew up in the 1960s and 70s, I was luckily enough to try foods from around the world, in Chicago. My Mom and Dad loved to dine out and enjoyed ethnic foods. In fact, we rarely went to American restaurants. Every Sunday evening, the family got dressed up and we went out for dinner. My …read more

Capital Fringe Festival - July 19-29

Explore the works of emerging DC area artists at the Capital Fringe Festival starting Thursday.
The festival invites art lovers and people not traditionally interested in art to discover “new, risk-taking art”.  So what’s this “new risk-taking art”?  Think performance art, poetry, plays, dance, music, video, visual arts, comedy, stories and more.  The list of events is over 100 long.
Some of the performances that sound rather interesting that I’m hoping to get to include:

Telemonster at the D.C. Arts Center Theater - A professional prank caller meets the woman of his dreams through a prank call.
Reefer Madness: The Musical at The Studio Theatre.  Need I …read more
