Eastern Market

Located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington DC is a historic and interesting jewel for shopping and spending a weekend afternoon - Eastern Market.
It’s a combination flea market, artist’s gallery, farmer’s market, antique bazaar, flowers shop, bakery and butcher shop spread over a couple blocks. Think of it as a big and somewhat whacky “town center meets mega garage sale”.

The market is actually comprised of a building with two large halls (north & south) which services as a food market and community center and its grounds plus a large parking lot across the street which houses the weekend open …read more

Five Tips and Family-Fun Things to do in Washington DC

Five Tips and Family-Fun Things to do in Washington DC

There’s really so much to do in DC with kids of all ages. So I thought I’d put a list together of fun kid-friendly things for families visiting Washington DC.

1) I’d recommend that you keep museum visits, especially the non-kid-friendly museums (such as art musuems) relatively short based on the kid’s ages, attention spans and interests.

2) The always kid-favorite National Museum of Natural History can keep the attention of just about any kid (and adult too). Dinosaurs, insects, the Hope Diamond and lots of special activities for kids in the Discovery Room, Insect Zoo and Naturalist Center are sure to delight the …read more

Cash or Credit? Oh, Sorry…Credit Only!

Cash or Credit? Oh, Sorry…Credit Only!

A Washington DC crepe café stopped accepting cash from customers. It now only accepts payment by credit and debit cards, as recently reported in a story on National Public Radio.
The shop’s owner stated the decision was made to try to reduce the risk of theft, eliminate the time and effort to make change for customers and to eliminate trips to the bank.
While it’s nice to reduce your business risks, I’m thinking the owner may have lost sight regarding her customer’s needs..???

The Société Anonyme: Modernism for America – The Phillips Collection

Are you a fan of modern art? If so, this is one exhibit you can’t miss. In fact, it may be the art exhibit of the year in Washington DC.

It introduced and promoted both now-recognized modern artists such as Alexander Calder, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and co-founder and Dada modernist Man Ray, as well as lesser-known artists in exhibitions throughout the U.S.

Jazz in DC

You might not think of our Nation’s Capital as a place for jazz, but DC has some rich jazz history. There are a couple top places for hearing live jazz that have been around for years.
